The Letter to the Editor below was first published on Saturday, May 26th on cleveland.com here under the title, "Candidate has plans to get court on track ."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's article, "Court has big backlog on custody, support," illustrates the need for reform at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court. As an assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor for 20 years, who has represented hundreds of victims, I can say with confidence that there is one certainty in the judicial system: All litigants want and deserve to have their cases handled in a professional, efficient and compassionate manner. That makes it imperative for court personnel to establish the procedures and culture that will enhance operations to ensure that citizens are treated expeditiously and with respect and dignity.

As a candidate for Juvenile Court judge, I have proposed a number of recommendations that will promote these objectives:

1. Utilize current technology such as electronic filings.

2. Direct custody magistrates to issue child-support orders. Develop comprehensive training to ensure that custody magistrates address a multitude of issues (i.e. custody, support and visitation).

3. Develop a revised notification process for court hearings. Promptly securing a court date will demonstrate to families that a court appearance in Juvenile Court will be productive.

Efficiency and effectiveness are critical to the success of our Juvenile Court, and families and children depend on it.

Frankie Goldberg, University Heights
